About the Author Frederick A. Laux, Q.C., a professor of law at the University of Alberta for 34 years, teaches Municipal Planning and Administrative Planning Law. He is considered Alberta's most respected and authoritative expert in the field of land use and planning.

Frederick A. Laux joined the University of Alberta Law Faculty in 1968 after graduating from Harvard Law School. For over 30 years he has made outstanding contributions in the field of planning law through spearheading law reform, drafting legislation, designing curricula, delivering courses and providing expert evidence while acting as counsel in the most complex and leading edge cases. His work is frequently cited by all levels of court including the Supreme Court of Canada. Professor Laux has written in areas as diverse as liability issues for planning authorities, zoning laws, the regulation of hazardous and environmentally sensitive lands, wills as instruments of subdivision, and the use of bonuses and tax exemptions to entice private development. His book Planning Law and Practice in Alberta is considered one of the most authoritative resources for professions involved in the field of land use and planning law. A major contributor to continuing legal education, he has prepared material and lectured to numerous groups of non-lawyers including those involved in the administration of these areas of law. Frederick Laux is the recipient of the 2002 Distinguished Service Award presented by the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association for his service to the community and the profession in legal scholarship
